The whole shuttle launch stack is tediously and slowly transported upright to the launch pad. The transport vehicle is, in fact, carrying the launch pad itself. NASA has two of these crawler-transporters, and they’ve been in use since the Apollo days of the sixties. They’re going to carry on seeing use in the Constellation program, carrying the Ares rockets.
