The manned X-15 aircraft flew at the edge of space in the mid 60s, and reached speeds of 7,000kph. Here it is before being launched like a missile off the bottom of a B-52 wing.
Flights like these earned Neil Armstrong his astronaut pin before he actually flew his first spaceflight.
